“Sky Blue and Black” by Jackson Browne is an emotional roller coaster, looking back on the joys and sorrows of love and its lasting impact. Browne wrote the song over a four-year period and released it on his album “I’m Alive” in 1992. The source material comes from Jackson’s relationship with a famous actress. However, Browne never wants his songs to be identified with his specific life events, so he rarely speaks about his real-life relationships, especially in context with his music.
“It’s a drag to even imagine that people are thinking about [the] relationship instead of their own lives,” Jackson told the Los Angeles Times. “I think if a song is any good, eventually it’ll turn out to be about the life of the listener and not about the life of the writer. Anyway, that’s my hope.”
Here’s my cover of “Sky Blue and Black”.

Oh, yes, I remember all that bad business with Jackson Browne and the famous actress. The initial reporting got a lot more coverage than Browne’s subsequent defamation suit and the retraction of the story …
I assume it was Browne suing the newspaper for defamation. I understand neither Browne nor the actress had anything bad to say publicly about each other.
Yes that’s right, Browne sued the news outlet (I couldn’t remember who but Wikipedia says it was Fox Television) and won a retraction.
Beautiful cover, David.
Thanks, Lavinia. I’ve always enjoyed playing this song. It’s an emotional release.
I personally never knew of his relationship issues maybe I was too young ? This song became special to me during a much troubled relationship eventually ending with much sadness. The live was deep but we just couldn’t make it work. I love him still and always will. I love this song 🩷
I’m glad this song touched you.
